We are all magickal beings, crafted from pure energy, and connected to all that resides within the known and unknown universe. But how we each recognize and experience that connection is vastly different – and wonderful.
I started out in early childhood, very organically exploring the hidden realms. I saw and knew unexplainable things, which led me to question everything, taking nothing on faith. I needed to understand my place in the world; where I came from and where I would one day return. Every rabbit hole led me down more pathways, until two decades ago, when I stumbled upon the Golden Dawn, and everything began to change for me.
I am a Hermetic Adept, fully initiated through the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. I received both my Portal and 5=6 grade initiations directly from Chic and Tabitha Cicero, whose lineage extends directly to Israel Regardie – the man credited with bringing the system to light.
So what is the Golden Dawn?
We are practitioners of High Magick, which is ritualistic, and requires specially made and consecrated tools that help us connect with and direct specific Divine energies. The purpose is spiritual enlightenment and personal transformation. And this is why I dove in 22 years ago.
It’s an intellectual practice, and one that was truly only accessible to the privileged elite before the last century. This was primarily because they were the ones with the resources to access the information, and the time on their hands to practice it. It demands serious study of ancient Egyptian, Greek, Judaic and Christian mystical texts, along with consistent practical application to achieve results. This is why so few people dabble in it, and fewer still make it through to fully initiated adepthood.
Folk Magick, by contrast, is wonderful in its simplicity. It is more sympathetic in nature, connecting with energy in very practical ways. And when you don’t have all day to perform a complex ritual, a little candle magick can definitely do the trick. I work with both, because I can. Sometimes, I even combine them (gasp!). I use whatever tools make the most sense for what I am wanting to accomplish and I am not concerned about anyone’s rules but my own.
However, when it comes to working on yourself at the deepest, most unconscious level, for the kind of help only the right Divine beings can give – High Magick wins, every time.
The problem really is accessibility for most people – and scarcity of knowledgeable practitioners willing to act as guides. This work is too important not to be shared – the planet needs more of us functioning at our best, for the highest good of all.
Around 2017, I had an epiphany about everything this work had done for me in my life, and exactly why. And that led to another realization: I could show others how to access the most essential parts of the system to shift their lives, too – without their having to join a temple, commit to endless hours of memorization, learn Hebrew and Greek, prove themselves through tedious testing, or spending thousands for the privilege.
So, I wrote a book – a manual, really – with a pared down system without the full weight of ceremonial practice behind it. Magicians call what we do The Great Work, because it is the ultimate self-development practice. And I’m going to start sharing it here on Substack next week, from behind the paywall.
